PM Shabaz Sharif’s New Statement Regarding Cashless Payment

In what he called the opening of a “new chapter” in Pakistan’s transition to a cashless economy, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said on Monday that financial aid under the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) will be distributed through digital wallets beginning this Ramadan.

10 Million Digital Wallet Under BISP 

The premier stated that implementing digital systems would help guarantee sustainable economic growth, enhance governance, and reduce corruption while presiding over a conference to assess progress on the digitalization of payments.

The prime minister was updated on the operationalization of 10 million digital wallets under BISP, which is scheduled to be finished by the end of this month, according to an official statement.

Mr. Sharif highlighted global trends and stated that Pakistan needs to adapt to the world’s swift transition to digital economies. He stated that the government’s early emphasis on digital transformation was now yielding noticeable effects, adding that “digital payments will enhance transparency and efficiency while reducing corruption.”

10 Million Digital Wallets To Be Activated This Month

The committee was informed that Raast QR codes are now being used to pay gas and electricity bills, facilitating digital transactions worth billions of rupees. Raast has also been integrated with the Islamabad government’s mobile application, and digital payment systems have been connected to the granting of new business licenses.

Retail establishments now use QR codes to encourage electronic transactions.

A crucial part of the larger financial inclusion goal, the licensing of digital banks, was also examined by the attendees.

PM Appreciates Stakeholders and Orders Faster Progress on Cashless Transition

The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR), State Bank of Pakistan, the Finance Ministry, the Ministry of IT, and other stakeholders were commended by the prime minister for their “commendable” performance. However, the prime minister ordered that all economic benchmarks for the cashless transition be met within the specified timeframes.

Noting that 68% of Pakistanis are now financially included, he gave officials instructions to increase this coverage.Federal ministers Ahad Khan Cheema, Muhammad Aurangzeb, Attaullah Tarar, Shaza Fatima Khawaja, and Bilal Azhar Kayani were present at the meeting, as were State Bank Governor Jameel Ahmad, NADRA Chairman Lt Gen Muhammad Munir Afzal, and FBR Chairman Rashid Mahmood Langrial.
